SUMMARY:Landscape 2021- Diversity for Sustainable and Resilient Agriculture\, Berlin\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Including a session hosted by our FOX partner Fraunhofer ISI\nLandscape 2021 will bring together scientists from across disciplines with key actors to explore whether and how diversity and diversification can contribute to a more sustainable and resilient agriculture. Promising approaches reduce trade-offs between high productivity and use of external resources\, the provisioning of ecosystem services\, biodiversity and soil health as well as robust economic perspectives\, social justice\, cultural values and recreational opportunities. We hypothesise that while diversification provides sustainable solutions at different scales\, it is the landscape or territoriales scale where synergies and trade-offs between social and environmental objectives become tangible. Conference contributions will include research from natural and social sciences\, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches on topics related to the diversification of crop and livestock production systems across scales.

SUMMARY:XIIIth International Controlled and Modified Atmosphere Research Conference (CAMA 2021)
DESCRIPTION:As we informed you earlier\, the XIIIth International Controlled and Modified Atmosphere Research Conference (CAMA) is postponed and will take place from August 15 to 18\, 2021. However\, given the standing uncertainties about vaccinations worldwide we have decided to organize CAMA2021 as a pure online event and cancel all physical activities in Leuven. While we regret having to take this decision we feel there is no other proper way to deal with it. \nWith the theme ‘Fast Forward to a Fresh Future’ we aim at creating a unique exchange forum for discussing recent progress in scientific knowledge and industrial development of controlled and modified atmosphere technology for fruit and vegetables. During the event\, we provide ample opportunities for presenting fundamental and applied research and technical innovations\, discussions with international experts from academia and industry\, and exhibitions of new products and services. \nThe conference will be organized by the staff of the MeBioS Postharvest group of KU Leuven and the Flanders Centre of Postharvest Technology\, in close collaboration with the ISHS\, who will do every effort to make CAMA2021 a memorable edition of the CAMA series providing an inspiring scientific exchange forum. \nLooking forward to e-meeting you at CAMA2021 coming August. \nBart Nicolaï and Maarten Hertog\, conference chairs.

SUMMARY:The Future of Food Conference 2020
DESCRIPTION:Bringing together EU policymakers\, EIT Food partners and other key stakeholders active in agri-food research\, innovation and education\, along the whole food value chain\, the conference will provide a high-level platform to discuss future trends and priorities in food innovation in Europe\, in the broader context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.\n\nOn day 1\, our aim is to discuss which role consumers can play in the implementation of the EU Farm to Fork Strategy\, and how innovation can help them. We will identify promising and innovative solutions that will support the Farm to Fork Strategy\, by building a more circular food system and supporting the sustainable labelling of food products. We will also look at the crucial work of farmers\, assessing their needs in terms of education and skills in the transition towards a more sustainable and viable food system.\n\nOn day 2\, the event will look at the opportunities and challenges of investing in the future of food\, in innovation\, entrepreneurship and education\, to help the agrifood sector contribute to the recovery of the European economy\, while setting it on a more resilient track. We will evaluate the impact of Covid19 on the agrifood sector and on consumer behaviour\, while at the same time reflecting on future global perspectives ahead of the 2021 UN Food System Summit.

We want to build on these experiences of farmers and related stakeholders. \n\n\nWe want you!\n\n\nWe are looking for experts (farmers\, representatives of farmers organizations or other stakeholders) that can critically reflect with us on the project in order to make the output as relevant as possible for them and their sector. \n\n\nThe focus\n\n\nSharing experiences\, good and best practices of farmers and other stakeholders with experiences in the domain of (on-farm) processing of fruits and vegetables. Both workshops will have limited participants allowing maximum exchange and learning for all. \n\n\nThe agenda\n\n\nPreliminary agenda of the FOX online workshop (same for 24th & 27th of November) \n08:00 – 9:00      Presentation of “best practices” in the region – videos of 4 case studies \n09:00 – 09:20    Welcome and scope of the workshop – FOX representative \n09:20 – 09:40    Presentation of the main results of the interviews \n09:40 – 11:10     Open guided discussion \n11:10 – 11:25     Coffee break \n11:25 – 12:00    Nutritional value of processed fruit and vegetables \n12:00 – 12:20    Wrap up   \n12:20 – 13:00     Feedback and closure of workshop – FOX representative \n\n\nMeaningful workshop\n\n\nWe work for both workshops with small groups (max 8 participants)\, allowing maximum exchange and learning for all participants. SUMMARY:EAAE WEBINAR 4: IMPROVING THE FUNCTIONING OF EU AGRI-FOOD SUPPLY CHAINS TO THE BENEFIT OF SMALL-SCALE PRODUCERS
DESCRIPTION:European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE) Webinar 4: Improving the functioning of EU agri-food supply chains to the benefit of small-scale producers \nDate: November 4\, 2020\nTime: 16.00-17.30 (GMT+1)\nOrganiser: Liesbeth Dries \nSmall-scale farms make up the majority of productive entities in EU agriculture. Likewise\, the EU food and drink industry is dominated by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In recent years\, concerns have risen about their socio-economic sustainability and market power in the food chain. Several EU policy initiatives have emerged (e.g.\, food quality schemes and innovation partnerships)\, to strengthen the position of small-scale producers in the food supply chain\, tackle unfair trading practices and better support the marketability of their products. To date\, limited systematic evidence is available about the impact of these EU policies on involved actors and the supply chain conditions that support the desired outcomes. \nThe webinar brings together insights from three EU-funded Horizon 2020 projects: Valumics (grant agreement No 72724); Strength2Food (grant agreement No 678024); SUFISA (grant agreement No 635577). The presentations: (i) identify appropriate indicators for measuring the resilience\, sustainability and inclusiveness of agri-food value chains across Europe (ii) provide comprehensive evidence of the impact of short food supply chain initiatives on small-scale producers in the EU; (iii) discuss under what institutional and governance conditions supply chains are effective tools for improving the fortunes of small-scale producers. \nTalks\n1. Assessment of fairness and market power in food value chains through simulation modelling\n(Olafsdottir\, G.\, McGarraghy\, S.\, Kasakov\, R.\, Gubrandsdottir\, I.Y.\, Aubert\, P.M.\, Cechura\, L.\, Samoggia\, A.\, Esposito\, G.\, Loveluck\, W.\, Huber\, E.\, Thakur\, M.\, Mehta\, S.\, Barling\, D.\, Gresham\, J.\, Duric\, I. \, Jamali Jaghdani\, T.\, Bogason\, S.G.) \n2. How sustainable are EU short food supply chains? Empirical evidence and recommendations\n(Barbara Tocco; Gunnar Vittersø; Agata Malak-Rawlikowska; Edward Majewski) \n3. Managing market uncertainty through vertical and horizontal coordination in the food chain\n(Erik Mathijs; Damian Maye; Mauro Vigani; Hannah Chiswell; Isabelle Bonjean; Eewoud Lievens)
